Orban Steps Back from Parliament to Focus on Political Movement
(MENAFN) Outgoing Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has announced that he will not take up his seat in the new parliament following Fidesz’s electoral defeat, saying instead that he will concentrate on reorganizing what he described as a “patriotic movement.”
In a video message released on Saturday, Orban stated that the parliamentary mandate he won as the head of the Fidesz-KDNP list effectively belongs to the party rather than to him personally, and that he has chosen to relinquish it.
“I am now needed not in parliament, but in the reorganization of the patriotic movement,” he said.
The decision comes less than two weeks after Fidesz suffered a significant defeat in Hungary’s April 12 parliamentary elections, where Peter Magyar’s Tisza party secured 141 of the 199 seats.
Orban also said that the party’s parliamentary group would undergo a major restructuring, with Gergely Gulyas expected to lead the new faction when it is formed on Monday. He added that a national assembly would be held next week, with plans to advance a party renewal congress to June.
Despite stepping away from parliament, Orban indicated that he intends to remain actively involved in party leadership. He said he is prepared to continue as president of Fidesz if the upcoming congress confirms confidence in his leadership.
He maintained a defiant tone, stating that the political camp he leads remains “Hungary’s most united and cohesive political community.”
