Romania Says UK Jets Got Green Light Against Drones Near Border

(MENAFN) British fighter jets operating from a Romanian air base were authorized to engage Russian drones near Romania’s border, according to statements from Romania’s Defense Ministry.

The incident involved RAF Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft deployed at the 86th Air Base in Fetesti, which took off at around 2 a.m. after detecting aerial activity near the border region. The ministry said radar contact was established with a target located approximately 1.5 kilometers from Reni, a Ukrainian port city close to Romanian territory along the Danube River.

Officials stated that pilots had been given authorization to respond to the drone threat if necessary. Reports also indicated that explosions were heard in the vicinity of Reni following the activity.

However, Romanian and UK defense officials later clarified that the aircraft did not cross into Ukrainian airspace and did not fire on any targets, returning to base without engaging.

According to the Romanian Defense Ministry, the drones in question did not enter Romanian airspace, meaning engagement rules were not triggered. It emphasized that the operation remained focused on surveillance, deterrence, and maintaining readiness to respond if required.
