Trump Demands WHCD Reschedule After Security Incident

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump has requested the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner be rescheduled within the coming month after a security breach involving a suspected gunman forced his evacuation from the venue during Saturday's event, the press organization confirmed.

WHCA Chair Weijia Jiang disclosed that Trump made the appeal following his removal from the Washington Hilton Hotel after the threat emerged. Though the president initially signaled his intention to return to the dinner following the evacuation, law enforcement authorities ultimately mandated a full clearance of the building, overriding earlier indications that the evening's program could continue.

Jiang subsequently assured the public that "everyone is safe," while confirming authorities had determined a complete evacuation was necessary. Sources within Trump's inner circle had anticipated he would take the stage once more, though those plans were scrapped.

The annual WHCD — long regarded as a ceremonial convergence of media and political culture — was thrown into disarray by the incident. Trump is now expected to attend the rescheduled gathering.

Secret Service Deputy Director Matthew Quinn offered a pointed assessment of the would-be intruder, stating the suspect "underestimated the protective capabilities" of the agency and "was stopped at first contact."

"Tonight, a coward attempted to create a national tragedy," Quinn said in a statement, adding that the strength of the agency's layered security measures was evident and thanking law enforcement personnel involved.

In a parallel development late Saturday, a multi-agency law enforcement response — including personnel from the FBI and a SWAT team — converged on an address in Torrance, California, connected to the suspect.

Authorities identified the individual as Cole Allen, 31, a Torrance resident located southwest of Los Angeles. Preliminary findings indicate Allen had been a registered guest at the hotel at the time of the incident. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday before a federal district court.
