Trump, Melania Get Evacuated from White House Correspondents’ Dinner
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump were evacuated on Saturday night from the annual White House Correspondents’ dinner in Washington, DC, following a security-related incident during the event.
According to reports, Trump and senior administration officials seated at the head table were escorted out by Secret Service agents as part of precautionary security procedures. Other attendees remained inside the ballroom at the Washington Hilton while the situation was handled.
The president and Vice President JD Vance were later reported to be “safe and secure.”
Witnesses described hearing sudden loud sounds during the gathering.
“We were sitting here, and we just heard a loud ‘pop, pop, pop.’ Everybody just went under the table, and we didn’t know what was happening,” a broadcaster quoted its White House correspondent Kellie Meyer as saying.
The head table was quickly removed from the stage area as security measures were implemented, while the rest of the guests stayed inside the venue.
Meyer also said she saw Cabinet members being escorted out of the event.
Details about the cause of the incident or whether anyone was injured were not immediately provided.
Later, host Weija Jiang informed attendees that the event would continue at a later time.
