Merz Says Iran War “Unnecessary”, Driving Global Energy Shockwaves

(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has characterized the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran as “completely unnecessary,” cautioning that its consequences are already producing wide-ranging geopolitical and economic effects, particularly in global energy markets, according to reports.

Speaking following an informal European Union summit held in Cyprus, Merz said the conflict is contributing to increased instability with repercussions felt across Europe, Asia, and the United States.

He emphasized the importance of European unity in addressing emerging international challenges.

“We have spent two days meeting with the 27 heads of state and government of the European Union to discuss how to tackle major challenges that lie ahead, including the lran conflict, and this completely unnecessary war there, as well as many other challenges we face."

Merz also stressed the need for Europe to adapt to evolving global conditions, noting that economic realities are shifting.

"We must accept this new economic reality, however difficult it may be."
