Hamas Calls Gaza Municipal Elections in Deir al-Balah an Important Step

(MENAFN) A Hamas spokesperson described the holding of municipal elections in the city of Deir al-Balah as an “important step,” according to reports.

Speaking to a news outlet, Hazem Qassem made his remarks as local voting began on Saturday across the occupied West Bank and in Deir al-Balah, as stated by reports.

“Holding elections in the city of Deir al-Balah is an important step, and we hope that appropriate conditions will be provided to hold them in all governorates and municipalities of the Gaza Strip,” Qassem said.

He added that there is hope for broader political arrangements in the future, stating: “We also hope that conditions will be created to hold comprehensive elections,” and calling for efforts toward “reorganizing the Palestinian house and holding legislative and presidential elections,” according to reports.

Qassem also praised efforts by local authorities in Gaza to facilitate the voting process, saying: “Our instructions were clear on the need to ensure the success of this process, and that it takes place under suitable conditions so that the Palestinian citizens can express their opinion through the ballot box.”

He further noted that Palestinian factions, including Hamas, had held discussions with various parties to help ensure a “suitable political and field environment” for the elections, as stated by reports.
