UK, Finland Urge Protection for Journalists in Lebanon

(MENAFN) The United Kingdom and Finland have jointly condemned what they described as “unacceptable” attacks on journalists and media workers in Lebanon, urging stronger safeguards for their protection, according to reports.

In their statement, issued in their capacity as co-chairs of the Media Freedom Coalition, the two countries emphasized that journalists play a crucial role in documenting the realities of conflict and must be allowed to work safely, as stated by reports.

“Journalists and media workers play an essential role in putting the spotlight on the devastating reality of war. Attacks on journalists in Lebanon, including journalist Amal Khalil killed in an Israeli strike on 22 April, are unacceptable,” they said.

“As co-chairs of the Media Freedom Coalition, the UK and Finland strongly condemn all violence directed against journalists and media workers,” the statement added.

They further called on all parties, including Israeli authorities, to take all necessary steps to ensure media personnel in Lebanon can carry out their work without threats or interference, according to reports.

The statement comes amid figures released by the Lebanese Press Syndicate Editors indicating that at least 27 journalists and media workers have been killed in Israeli strikes in Lebanon since March 2, with several others injured, as stated by reports.
