Iranian Diplomatic Push Continues with Oman Visit

(MENAFN) Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Muscat on Saturday evening at the head of a diplomatic delegation, as part of ongoing regional consultations, according to reports.

During his stay in Oman’s capital, Araghchi is expected to meet senior officials to address bilateral ties and review current regional developments.

The visit comes shortly after his trip to Pakistan, where he outlined Tehran’s stance on efforts to end the ongoing conflict. In a statement, he said he had presented his country’s “position concerning a workable framework to permanently end the war on Iran,” without elaborating further.

He also cast doubt on Washington’s approach, stating: “Have yet to see if the U.S. is truly serious about diplomacy,” in remarks shared on the US-based social media platform X.

Pakistan has been playing a mediating role between Iran and the United States amid heightened tensions following recent military escalation.

Araghchi reached Pakistan late Friday and held talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad on Saturday, as part of attempts to restart stalled negotiations between Tehran and Washington aimed at ending their eight-week conflict.

An initial round of talks took place in Islamabad two weeks earlier but did not result in a deal to halt the fighting, which began on Feb. 28 and spread across the Middle East. The negotiations followed a two-week ceasefire arranged by Pakistan on April 8, later extended by US President Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, Trump announced on Saturday that he had cancelled a planned visit to Pakistan by special envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner.

“I've told my people a little while ago they were getting ready to leave, and I said, 'Nope, you're not making an 18 hour flight to go there. We have all the cards. They can call us anytime they want, but you're not going to be making any more 18 hour flights to sit around talking about nothing',” Trump said during a phone interview, according to reports.

Iran has declined to engage in direct negotiations with the United States, indicating instead that its positions would be communicated through Pakistan.

Among the key unresolved issues, according to reports, are the Strait of Hormuz, the US blockade of Iranian ports, and Iran’s enriched uranium program.
