Ciudad NYA, a premier mixed-use development in Liberia, Guanacaste, has officially completed the construction of its centerpiece: a massive 3.5-hectare lagoon featuring Crystal Lagoons® technology-the first of its kind in Costa Rica.

Spanning 900 hectares, Ciudad NYA aims to redefine urban living in the region. The newly finished lagoon boasts seven white-sand beaches, a central island with docks, and a 1.6-kilometer perimeter trail for walking and recreation.

“Completing this lagoon marks a turning point for Ciudad NYA and Guanacaste,” said Manuel Freer, CEO and co-founder of NYA.“It is the infrastructure that breathes life into our vision of an innovative and sustainable city.”

A Sustainable Approach to Water Innovation

The lagoon operates on a closed-circuit system, meaning it is filled only once. According to the technical team, it only requires water replacement due to natural evaporatio, which is partially offset by rainfall during the wet season. Key sustainability facts include:

Water Sourcing: Water is drawn from authorized wells approved by the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE), ensuring no impact on communal water systems (ASADAs).

Efficiency: The technology uses up to 30 times less water than a golf course of comparable size.

Eco-Friendly Maintenance: It requires 100 times fewer chemicals than a conventional swimming pool and consumes only 2% of the energy used by traditional filtration systems.

What's Next for Ciudad NYA?

The project is moving fast. Throughout 2026, the first residential units in Tower A will be delivered to their owners. In tandem, the development is preparing to open:

Commercial spaces and retail areas.

Recreational zones.

A full calendar of sports, cultural, and entertainment activities.

Ciudad NYA integrates residential, commercial, and tourism development while dedicating a significant portion of its 900 hectares to natural conservation.
