US Navy Secretary Steps Down Amid Tense Mideast Naval Posture

(MENAFN) The US Navy Secretary has abruptly left his post, with the Pentagon confirming his immediate departure but offering no explanation for the decision, according to official statements.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement that the official was “departing the administration” with immediate effect, and that the Undersecretary of the Navy will serve as acting secretary.

“On behalf of the Secretary of War and Deputy Secretary of War, we are grateful to Secretary Phelan for his service to the Department and the United States Navy. We wish him well in his future endeavors,” Parnell said in the statement.

The announcement did not provide any reason for the departure and was shared without additional comment by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

The outgoing secretary, a businessman appointed after being nominated by President Donald Trump, had been in office for a relatively short period following his confirmation in 2025.

His departure comes at a sensitive time for US naval operations in the Middle East, where American forces remain engaged in maritime security operations linked to ongoing tensions involving Iran. The situation around key shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, continues to be closely monitored despite diplomatic efforts and temporary de-escalation measures.
