Shooting Leaves Six Dead, Fourteen Injured in Kiev

(MENAFN) A mass shooting tore through the Ukrainian capital on Saturday, leaving six people dead and 14 wounded after a gunman opened fire on pedestrians before barricading himself inside a supermarket with hostages — and was ultimately killed by security forces.

The attack unfolded in Kiev's southern Holosiivsky district, where the shooter targeted civilians on the street before retreating into a nearby supermarket and seizing hostages, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed. He added that the attacker was killed during the arrest.

Ukraine's Prosecutor General's Office identified the gunman as a 58-year-old man.

Ukraine's Security Service (SSU) moved swiftly to designate the incident an act of terrorism, according to a news agency.

"Investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine have classified the shooting of civilians and the taking of hostages in the Holosiivsky district of Kiev as a terrorist act," the SSU said in a statement.

Authorities have not yet established a motive, and an investigation remains ongoing.
