Agricultural Exports Hit A Record High Last Year, Says Minister Of Agriculture

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) AMMAN - Minister of Agriculture Saeb Khreissat on Thursday said Jordan's agricultural sector continues to post strong performance, underpinned by improved supply chains and growing domestic production.

Speaking to Al Mamlaka TV, Khreissat described the sector as a "success story" despite limited natural resources, highlighting its role in strengthening food security through diversified crop and livestock production, as well as food industries.

He noted that increased supply has led to a decline in market prices, with large quantities of agricultural produce currently entering local markets.

Khreissat said agricultural exports reached a record JD1.680 billion last year, an increase of JD150 million compared with 2024, while the Kingdom's self-sufficiency rate in key agricultural products, including vegetables and fruits, as well as poultry and table eggs, stood at 61.8 per cent.

He added that Jordan is working to boost domestic output and reduce reliance on imports through a carefully managed import policy aimed at mitigating risks linked to global market fluctuations.

Khreissat also noted that strategic reserves of wheat and barley are sufficient for nine to 10 months, in line with international standards.

He highlighted ongoing government measures to enhance food security and maintain adequate reserves of essential commodities to ensure uninterrupted supply under various conditions.

On supply chains and foreign trade, Khreissat said Aqaba Port is operating at full capacity without interruption.

He added that efforts are under way to diversify export and import routes through land transport and regional cooperation, including via Syria to Turkey and Europe, as well as alternative logistics channels to ensure smooth trade flows.
