Israeli Supreme Court Deliberates Ben-Gvir Removal Petitions
(MENAFN) Israel’s Supreme Court has postponed its ruling following a lengthy and turbulent hearing on Wednesday concerning petitions calling for the removal of National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir over allegations that he unlawfully interfered in police operations.
According to reports, the nearly 10-hour session ended without a decision, with the court stating that its ruling will be issued at a later date.
During the proceedings, judges reportedly suggested a possible interim arrangement between Ben-Gvir and Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara aimed at defining limits on the minister’s involvement in policing matters.
Government representatives agreed to explore the proposal, while the attorney general rejected any compromise unless the court first issued a temporary order restricting Ben-Gvir’s influence over police activities.
The hearing, which was broadcast live, quickly became disorderly. For the first time, access to the courtroom was restricted to petitioners, legal representatives, ministers, and members of parliament.
Tensions escalated when Supreme Court President Isaac Amit entered the courtroom and Deputy Minister Almog Cohen interrupted proceedings, shouting: “You are the head of corruption! You have a conflict of interest!”
He was immediately removed from the courtroom.
