Russia Claims EU Preparing for Major War Amid UN Security Council Remarks

(MENAFN) Moscow has accused European Union member states of engaging in large-scale military preparations that it claims indicate readiness for a potential major war against Russia, according to remarks made during a United Nations Security Council session.

Russia’s envoy to the UN Security Council, Vasily Nebenzya, said European defense spending has risen sharply, arguing that the EU has significantly expanded its military capacity in recent years.

He stated that defense expenditures across the bloc reached hundreds of billions of euros last year, placing the European Union among the world’s top military spenders after the United States.

“These large-scale military preparations leave no doubt that Europe is seriously preparing for a major war against Russia,” he said.

Nebenzya also warned that continued escalation could provoke a response from Moscow, accusing the EU of adopting increasingly confrontational policies.

He further criticized European countries for expanding military support to Ukraine, alleging that such actions contradict international commitments and contribute to prolonging the conflict.

According to his remarks, EU policy is focused on achieving what he described as a “strategic defeat” for Russia, while simultaneously increasing sanctions and reducing space for diplomatic solutions.

He added that European officials are dismissing diplomatic engagement and reinforcing what he characterized as a war-oriented approach to the crisis, further deepening tensions between Moscow and Brussels.
