Zelenskyy Moves to Forge Expanded Security Deals Beyond Europe
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Monday that Kyiv is actively laying the groundwork for an expanded web of security partnerships stretching from Europe to the Gulf, the Caucasus, and beyond.
Speaking through the US social media platform X following a closed-door session with Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov, Zelenskyy signaled Ukraine's intent to leverage its hard-won battlefield expertise as a tradeable security asset on the world stage.
"This applies to protection against attack drones and other UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) types in the air, as well as to addressing maritime security tasks -- Ukraine's experience in the Black Sea can also be put to use on other globally important maritime routes," he said.
Zelenskyy identified Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, and Syria as active dialogue partners on security matters, while also confirming that Iraq had formally requested engagement. The outreach reflects a calculated effort by Kyiv to broaden its diplomatic footprint well beyond its immediate European neighborhood.
"Today, we also discussed prospects for joint work with the countries of the Caucasus, as well as East and Southeast Asia. There are also substantive requests from countries in Africa," he added.
The president confirmed he had directed Umerov to finalize drafts of several new security agreements and prepare them for signing — a signal that Kyiv is moving from consultation toward binding commitments. Zelenskyy further noted Ukraine's readiness to provide "prompt and effective support to those who support our state and independence."
The announcements follow Zelenskyy's late-March Gulf tour, during which he signed defense agreements with Saudi Arabia and Qatar, while also advancing a security cooperation framework with the UAE, with final agreement details still being concluded.
Last week, Zelenskyy had already signaled that talks with European nations on Russian drone defense and Ukraine's EU accession bid were imminent, describing them as coming "in the near future."
