Lebanon PM Pledges to End Israel’s War on Lebanon

(MENAFN) Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam reaffirmed Sunday his government's commitment to halting the Israeli war on Lebanon and reclaiming full sovereignty over occupied territory, as the country braced for the anniversary of its devastating civil war.

Speaking at a press conference in Beirut, Salam pledged that his administration would press ahead on multiple fronts.

"Working to end this war, secure the Israeli withdrawal from all our territory, and secure the return of all our prisoners," he said, outlining his government's core priorities.

His remarks came on the eve of the anniversary of Lebanon's civil war, which ignited in 1975 and raged for 15 years, claiming 150,000 lives, wounding 300,000 others, and uprooting more than one million people.

Salam also vowed to accelerate reconstruction efforts in communities devastated by Israeli strikes and to facilitate the return of displaced residents to their homes and villages.

"The south will not be abandoned again to face fear, destruction, and anxiety about its future," he stressed. "Its protection, like the protection of all of Lebanon, can only be achieved through a single, strong, and just state."

The Israeli military has carried out relentless airstrikes on Lebanon since Hezbollah launched a cross-border assault on March 2, leaving at least 2,055 dead and nearly 6,600 wounded — a toll compounding amid broader regional upheaval following a joint US-Israeli offensive on Iran.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Saturday that Israel would intensify operations in Lebanon, ruling out any negotiations unless Hezbollah is disarmed and a peace deal "that endures for generations" is reached.

The escalation unfolds as Lebanon's presidency confirmed Friday that Beirut and Israel had agreed to convene their first meeting in Washington on April 14 — a development swiftly condemned by Hezbollah.
