Hungarian Elections See Record Turnout In First Hours Of Voting, BBC Reports
In most pre-election polls, voters favor Péter Magyar and his Tisza party.
Three hours after voting began, a record 16.89% of voters had cast their ballots, which is six percentage points higher than in 2022 and indicates that voters are much more active this time, the BBC reports.
Voting will continue until 7:00 p.m. local time (8:00 p.m. Kyiv time), and results will begin to come in this evening.
Hungary has a complex electoral system: Of the 199 seats in parliament, 106 are elected by direct vote in constituencies, while the remaining 93 seats are allocated based on party lists, for which both Hungarians abroad and those in the country can vote. In constituencies, votes for losing parties are transferred to the national list. Winning parties also receive surplus votes, which has often worked in Fidesz's favor. Parties must secure 5% of the vote nationally to enter parliament.
Both Orbán and Magyar have already voted in the Budapest elections. Orbán told reporters after casting his ballot:“I am here to win,” and when asked if he had underestimated his opponent, he replied:“I don't underestimate anyone,” Telex reports
After the vote, Magyar told reporters that the Tisza party's platform, set up to receive reports of election fraud, had received about 60 reports so far.
He noted that he does not expect his party to lose, adding that they would accept the result only if no election fraud could significantly affect the outcome.
