Russian Official Warns Armenia Against Undervaluing Moscow’s Support
(MENAFN) Armenian leaders are advised not to underestimate Moscow’s backing, particularly in the form of low gas prices, according to Konstantin Kosachev, vice speaker of the Russian parliament’s upper chamber, as stated by reports. His comments follow a suggestion from a senior Armenian lawmaker that Yerevan could reconsider its ties with Moscow if advantageous supply terms were altered.
In remarks on Monday, Kosachev highlights that the “current price of Russian gas is a potent stimulus for the development of many of Armenia’s economic sectors and a significant factor for social and political stability in the country.”
“It seems to me that it would be fair if Armenian politicians took into account the extent of Russia’s support to Armenia, instead of speculating on hypothetical changes to the pricing policy,” he adds.
The senator emphasizes that Armenia enjoys a relatively secure energy position at a time when much of Europe faces soaring oil and gas prices amid ongoing US-Israeli actions against Iran.
Earlier, the president of Armenia’s National Assembly, Alen Simonyan, indicated that if Moscow were to increase gas prices, Yerevan might consider leaving the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), according to reports.
