Vietnam's To Lam Elected as State President for 2026–2031 Term
(MENAFN) Vietnam's national legislature voted unanimously Tuesday to install Communist Party General Secretary To Lam as the country's state president, granting him a five-year mandate to lead the nation.
The vote marks Lam's second time holding the presidency, following a brief stint in the role in 2024, a local outlet reported.
He is now constitutionally bound to serve as president through the 2026–2031 term while simultaneously retaining his position as general secretary of the ruling Communist Party — a rare dual role consolidating significant authority in a single leader.
Over his 18 months at the helm of the party, Lam has been the driving force behind key decisions taken by the Central Committee, Politburo, and Secretariat, all oriented toward fast-tracking Vietnam's national development.
Central to his agenda are two defining long-term benchmarks: elevating Vietnam to the status of an upper-middle-income country with a modernized industrial base by 2030, and transforming it into a high-income, fully developed nation by 2045.
Lam has also pursued bold structural reforms on the administrative front, dismantling redundant government institutions and cutting down the total number of provinces and cities in a bid to streamline governance and reduce bureaucratic inefficiency.
