Iran Releases Detained Japanese NHK Journalist on Bail
(MENAFN) A Japanese citizen held in Iran has been released on bail, Tokyo confirmed Tuesday, marking a significant diplomatic development between the two nations.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara announced at a press briefing that the individual was freed on Monday local time. He declined to reveal the detainee's identity, media reported.
Japan's ambassador to Iran personally met with the released national and verified that their condition raised no medical concerns, Kihara confirmed. The Japanese government has since pressed Iranian authorities to permit the citizen's return to Japan.
The release follows a direct diplomatic appeal by Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, who on Monday held a phone call with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, demanding the individual's freedom.
Sources within the Japanese government identified the freed individual to media as the Tehran bureau chief of public broadcaster NHK, who had been held in Iranian custody since January. The journalist faces security-related charges and is still expected to appear before an Iranian court.
Tokyo disclosed last month that two of its citizens were being held in Iran. The first detainee was repatriated on March 22, with Monday's release now accounting for both cases.
