(MENAFN) President Donald Trump unveiled a proposal on Friday for a $1.5 trillion defense budget for fiscal year 2027, marking the largest military spending request in US history, while simultaneously advocating significant reductions in domestic expenditures.

According to official budget documents released ahead of the annual proposal, the plan allocates $1.15 trillion for discretionary defense programs and an additional $350 billion in mandatory funding, totaling $1.5 trillion for military purposes.

At the same time, the administration is seeking to cut discretionary non-defense spending by roughly 10%, amounting to about $73 billion. The proposal underscores Trump’s ongoing push to expand military funding while trimming domestic programs.

The record increase in defense outlays comes amid mounting political pressure related to the ongoing conflict with Iran.

While Congress is unlikely to approve the full range of domestic cuts, the budget is expected to influence fiscal debates on Capitol Hill and signal the administration’s spending priorities ahead of the November midterm elections.
