Maldives Heads to Polls in Local Council Elections
(MENAFN) Maldives voters turned out Saturday for a landmark triple ballot — casting votes in local council elections, Women's Development Committee (WDC) polls, and a nationwide constitutional referendum that could fundamentally redraw the country's political calendar.
A total of 294,876 registered voters were eligible to participate, according to a local media outlet.
At the heart of Saturday's exercise is a proposed constitutional amendment cleared by parliament on Feb. 10 — a measure that would allow presidential and parliamentary elections to be conducted simultaneously and establish a fixed start date for parliamentary terms, changes that supporters argue would streamline governance and reduce electoral fatigue.
President Mohamed Muizzu cast his ballot at a polling station in his own constituency, participating across all three votes — the local council elections, the WDC polls, and the public referendum. He used the occasion to call on all citizens to fulfill their civic duty and make their voices heard.
The simultaneous staging of three distinct democratic exercises marks one of the most complex polling days in the island nation's recent history, with the referendum outcome poised to have lasting consequences for how — and when — Maldivians choose their national leadership going forward.
