Iranian Drone Attack Causes Major Damage to US Embassy in Saudi Arabia
(MENAFN) An Iranian drone attack on the US Embassy in Saudi Arabia last month caused more destruction than initially disclosed, according to reports citing US officials.
The strike occurred on March 3, when a drone evaded air defenses in Riyadh’s Diplomatic Quarter and hit the American compound. A second drone struck the same location shortly after, triggering another explosion.
The nighttime assault breached a secure section of the embassy, typically housing hundreds of employees, and severely damaged three floors. Among the affected areas was the CIA station.
US officials indicated that while Saudi authorities initially described the incident as a minor fire with limited impact, the blaze actually lasted for hours and inflicted substantial, irreparable damage to parts of the compound.
Additional drones were intercepted later that night, with debris falling near a preschool. One drone appeared to target the residence of the top US diplomat in Saudi Arabia, located just a few hundred feet from the embassy.
