Russia, Ukraine Trade Large-Scale Drone Strikes
(MENAFN) Russia and Ukraine exchanged large-scale drone strikes overnight Saturday, with both sides reporting significant interceptions in one of the most intense aerial exchanges in recent weeks.
The Russian Defense Ministry announced its air defense forces neutralized 155 Ukrainian drones in a single overnight operation across western Russia.
"From 23:00 Moscow time (2000 GMT) on March 27 to 07:00 Moscow time (0400 GMT) on March 28, active-duty air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 155 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions in western Russia," it said.
Two of those drones were intercepted before reaching the Russian capital, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed, noting that "emergency services personnel are working at the debris impact site."
The Russian Defense Ministry further disclosed that its forces conducted one massive strike and five separate group strikes against Ukrainian military-related targets over the past week, with 3,138 Ukrainian drones brought down during that same period.
On the Ukrainian side, the country's Air Force reported that Russia launched a 273-drone assault beginning at 18:00 Kyiv time (1600 GMT) on Friday. By 07:30 Kyiv time (0530 GMT) Saturday, 252 of those drones had been shot down or electronically suppressed.
The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed that 18 locations sustained hits, with debris impact reported across multiple areas of the country.
Ground-level hostilities remained intense as well. The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported 181 separate combat engagements recorded within a 24-hour window, as of 08:00 Kyiv time (0600 GMT) on Saturday.
