Russia’s Makhachkala Declares Emergency After Heavy Rain, Floods
(MENAFN) Authorities in Makhachkala, a city in Russia’s Dagestan region, declared a state of emergency on Saturday due to intense rainfall that has caused widespread flooding and landslides, as stated by reports on the city’s official channels.
Emergency services have been placed on high alert, with response teams mobilized to assist affected residents, according to the statement. The heavy rains have left over half a million people without electricity.
“The main problem hampering power supply to currently unpowered homes is widespread flooding. This primarily affects Makhachkala and Khasavyurt,” the statement said, noting that three major power supply centers in the capital have been submerged.
Authorities have also issued a landslide warning for the town of Buynaksk, with residents being relocated to safer locations.
“There have been landslides in the Tlyaratinsky and Tsumadinsky districts. The affected sections of roads are closed, and work is underway,” the statement added.
So far, 103 people have been evacuated from homes inundated by floodwaters. In addition, a high alert has been declared across the wider Dagestan region until Monday, emphasizing the ongoing risk posed by the severe weather.
