Costa Rica Reaches 120 Wildfires And Breaks Historical Records Ahead Of A Critical Month
Costa Rica has reached 120 wildfires so far in 2026. This figure already exceeds the records set in 2024-the most critical year of the last decade-and comes ahead of the most intense period of the dry season.
According to data from the Fire Department, by this same date in 2024 there were 109 fires, while in 2025 there were barely 40.
“Without a doubt, 2026 has been a year in which forest fires have surpassed all limits of recent years, including 2024, which ended with 141 emergencies,” stated Héctor Chaves, director of the Fire Department.
Rapid Increase in WildfiresAccording to the data, the increase has been steady and accelerating in recent weeks.
At the end of February, the country recorded 65 fires, while on March 17, the figure rose to 100. As of March 24, the number of incidents responded to has now exceeded 120.
This trend is occurring even though one of the most critical months of the dry season-which historically peaks between March and April-is still ahead.
ArsonIn addition, Chaves warned that most of the fires are not caused by natural factors.
“Virtually all of them are intentionally set, and vandalism is the reason behind all of this,” the director warned.
The areas most affected this year are Guanacaste and the Central Pacific, where high temperatures, Low humidity and wind contribute to the spread of fire
.
Impact Beyond the EnvironmentOn the other hand, the impact of the fires is no longer limited solely to biodiversity, where wild animals flee from the flames.
According to the Fire Department, the emergency also affects key sectors such as the economy, tourism, and road safety.
“For example, the Liberia airport has had to close several times due to wildfires. Hotel and tourist areas have also been affected by the smoke,” explained Chaves.
Additionally, risks are being reported on roads due to reduced visibility, disruptions to industrial processes, contamination of water sources, and poor air quality.
Emergencies Strain ResourcesAt the same time, the high number of fires is putting pressure on the response capacity of emergency teams.
The fire department noted that, when responding to wildfires and brush fires, units must travel outside city limits, which increases response times for other emergencies.
“When fires occur simultaneously, response times increase, leading to greater losses and putting people's lives at risk,” the director noted.
In addition, brush fires have already exceeded 6,500 incidents this year, which increases operational demands.
Holy WeekThe fire department urged the public to avoid using open flames, especially with Holy Week approaching.
Authorities warned that activities such as bonfires or controlled burns could exacerbate the situation given the current weather conditions, which are conducive to the spread of fire.
“It is important to minimize the use of unnecessary open flames, and if you do use them, make sure to extinguish them completely,” Chaves concluded.
