White House Rejects Musk Proposal to Cover TSA Salaries
(MENAFN) The White House has reportedly rejected a proposal from billionaire Elon Musk to fund the salaries of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees during the ongoing partial government shutdown, according to reports.
Officials in the administration reviewed Musk’s suggestion but decided against it, anticipating that the shutdown would end soon. Legal considerations tied to Musk’s government contracts were also cited as a factor, as direct or indirect funding of federal wages could present legal challenges.
"I would like to offer to pay the salaries of TSA personnel," Musk had said earlier, noting that the funding impasse is “negatively affecting the lives of so many Americans” at airports.
TSA workers are continuing to perform their duties without full pay while Congress has yet to approve a new funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which has constrained payroll. The funding lapse, which began on February 14, has disrupted operations across multiple DHS agencies, prompting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to deploy to airports to help address operational challenges.
