Bus-Truck Collision Leaves Over Dozen Dead in India


(MENAFN) At least 13 people are dead and more than 20 others wounded after a bus slammed into a truck and erupted in flames in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh in the early hours of Thursday, authorities confirmed.

The deadly crash occurred at approximately 6 am local time (0030 GMT) in the state's Markapuram district. The impact triggered a blaze that engulfed the vehicle, leaving passengers trapped and burned alive, officials said.

"So far we have reports of 13 deaths and more than 20 injured," a police official in the Markapuram district told media.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu ordered authorities to conduct a thorough probe into what caused the collision. In a post on X, the US-based social media platform, Naidu's office confirmed he had directed officials to carry out a "comprehensive investigation" into the causes of the accident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the crash as "tragic" and announced financial compensation for the families of those killed as well as for survivors who sustained injuries.

Rescue and emergency operations were launched immediately following the incident, as authorities worked to establish the full scale of casualties. Investigations into the precise circumstances of the collision remain ongoing.
