Israel Moves to Increase Military Presence in Lebanon
(MENAFN) Israel reportedly plans to expand its military footprint up to 8 kilometers (5 miles) inside Lebanese territory, according to reports.
The Israeli army has already begun establishing 18 new military positions within Lebanon, with some located deep inside the country, as stated by reports. Discussions among Israeli officials reportedly concluded that maintaining full control over territory up to the Litani River—and even beyond in certain areas—was necessary.
The plan includes “moving the Israeli army’s operational defense line into Lebanese territory, at least 8 kilometers from the international border,” according to reports. The Litani River, Lebanon’s main waterway, runs through the Bekaa Valley between the country’s mountain ranges.
This expansion comes amid ongoing Israeli airstrikes and a ground offensive in southern Lebanon following a cross-border attack by Hezbollah on March 2. Lebanese authorities report at least 1,072 fatalities and 2,966 injuries resulting from the Israeli operations.
The escalation occurs in the context of a broader US-Israeli offensive against Iran, which has reportedly killed more than 1,340 people since Feb. 28. Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, as well as US military assets in Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries.
These attacks have caused casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions to regional security and global markets.
