White House Turns Down Musk's Offer to Cover Wages of TSA Workers

(MENAFN) The White House has turned away a proposal from tech billionaire Elon Musk to personally fund the salaries of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers sidelined by a partial government shutdown, media reported Wednesday.

Senior Trump administration officials reviewed the offer but ultimately rejected it, banking on expectations that the funding impasse would be resolved in short order. Legal complications tied to Musk's extensive portfolio of government contracts also factored heavily into the decision, as any direct or indirect financing of federal employee wages risked triggering significant legal challenges.

Musk had stepped forward with the proposal amid growing disruption at airports across the country.

"I would like to offer to pay the salaries of TSA personnel," Musk said earlier, noting that the funding crisis is "negatively affecting the lives of so many Americans" at airports.

TSA officers have been reporting to work without full compensation as a prolonged budget standoff on Capitol Hill continues to paralyze agency payroll. Congress has yet to pass a new Department of Homeland Security (DHS) appropriations bill, leaving TSA without the funds needed to pay its workforce.

The funding lapse, which took effect Feb. 14, has sent shockwaves through multiple DHS-affiliated agencies. In response, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have been deployed to US airports in an effort to manage the operational fallout.
