White House Declines Musk Proposal to Fund TSA Salaries During Shutdown
(MENAFN) The administration of US President Donald Trump has reportedly dismissed an offer by billionaire Elon Musk to personally cover the salaries of Transportation Security Administration workers amid the ongoing partial government shutdown, according to reports.
Officials reviewed the idea but ultimately chose not to proceed, citing expectations that the funding stalemate would be resolved in the near term. Concerns over potential legal complications were also a factor, particularly given Musk’s existing contractual ties with the federal government, which could raise issues around privately financing public sector wages.
“I would like to offer to pay the salaries of TSA personnel,” Musk said earlier, noting that the funding crisis is “negatively affecting the lives of so many Americans” at airports.
At present, TSA employees remain on duty despite not receiving full pay, as the budget deadlock in Congress continues to impact airport operations nationwide. Lawmakers have yet to approve new funding for the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the agency, resulting in payroll disruptions.
The shutdown, which began on Feb. 14, has affected several agencies under the department.
As part of efforts to manage the situation, Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel have been deployed to airports to help address operational challenges, as stated by reports.
