Canada Calls for De-escalation of Israel’s Southern Lebanon Occupation Plan

(MENAFN) According to reports, Canada has issued a strong condemnation of Israel’s reported plan to occupy parts of southern Lebanon, urging all sides to respect sovereignty and reduce escalating tensions in the region.

Canada’s Foreign Ministry stated on a social media platform that Lebanon’s territorial integrity must remain protected, while also asserting that attacks carried out by Hezbollah against Israel should come to an end and that the group should disarm.

The statement further expressed support for the Lebanese government and its population, while emphasizing the importance of safeguarding civilians and avoiding harm to critical infrastructure. It also called on all involved parties to refrain from targeting medical personnel, peacekeepers, and essential facilities, and to comply with international legal standards.

The comments come in response to reports suggesting that Israel is considering occupying a first line of villages in southern Lebanon as part of a broader security strategy aimed at limiting rocket attacks.

At the same time, Hezbollah has reportedly continued launching rockets toward Israel since early March. These actions are described as retaliation for ongoing Israeli strikes in Lebanon, despite a ceasefire that was established in November 2024. The escalation is also linked in reports to earlier events, including the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei during a joint US-Israeli airstrike on February 28, which has contributed to heightened regional tensions.
