In an effort to make Dubai roads safer, authorities have been inspecting delivery vehicles, especially bicycles. In a joint inspection campaign by Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police, over 390 bicycles were impounded by officers in three months for breaking the rules.

The campaign specifically targeted areas frequented by delivery riders, including Al Muraqqabat, Dubai Marina, Dubai Silicon Oasis, and Downtown Dubai. The main goal was to make sure that delivery companies and their riders followed the correct licensing rules and safety standards set by the emirate.

According to Saeed Al Ramsi, Director of Licensing Activities Monitoring at Licensing Agency at RTA, the use of bicycles in the delivery sector is growing rapidly and it has become one of the key economic activities in the emirate.“This growth calls for stronger field oversight and strict compliance with safety requirements for riders and road users,” he said.“It is equally important to ensure that those working in this sector deliver the highest standards of service to the public across all segments of society.”

Checks on a regular basis

The inspections by patrol officers focused on verifying compliance with the regulations and requirements governing these bicycles. Some of these rules including the installation of a white front light, a red rear reflector, a bell mounted on the handlebar, and functional front and rear brakes.

Officers highlighted the need for bicycle riders to comply with licensing requirements including wearing the designated uniform and approved protective gear such as a helmet, reflective vest, and elbow and knee guards. Riders are also required to use designated lanes and roads with speed limits below 60 km/h and to stop only in designated areas.

Al Rami added that the checks were conducted on a regular basis.“RTA continuously organises joint awareness campaigns and patrols in coordination with strategic partners, targeting this vital sector,” he said.“These initiatives focus on briefing delivery service establishments on the applicable regulations and violations, as well as the relevant circulars and regulatory guidelines, emphasising the importance of compliance with the governing rules and laws to ensure the safety of delivery riders and road users.”

Last year, RTA announced that it was piloting an AI-driven project that will reduce motorcycle accidents by at least 50 percent using cameras, face recognition and telematics systems to ensure that riders are qualified, driving safe and are staying with the location limits prescribed for them.
