Iran Launches Drone Attack on UAE Base Housing Australian Forces

(MENAFN) Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles confirmed Tuesday that all Australian military personnel are "safe and accounted for" following an Iranian drone assault on a UAE air base where Australian forces are stationed, media reported.

The attack targeted Al Minhad Air Base on the opening night of what has since become a period of intensifying regional hostilities. Marles stated that no Australian service members sustained injuries during the strike.

Situated approximately 40 kilometers — around 24 miles — from Dubai, Al Minhad has historically functioned as a critical logistics and operations hub for the Australian Defense Force (ADF). Australian military personnel have maintained a presence at the base since 2003, though troop numbers dropped considerably in the wake of the 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal.

According to the Defense Department, roughly 100 ADF members are currently deployed across the broader Middle East region, with the largest concentration based in the UAE.

The incident is not without precedent. In 2019, rockets struck an Iraqi military base sheltering more than 300 ADF personnel while Australian and New Zealand troops were jointly engaged in a mission to train Iraqi forces — underscoring a troubling pattern of overseas installations hosting Australian soldiers coming under hostile fire.
