UNESCO Denounces Missile Attack on Girls’ School in Iran’s Minab

(MENAFN) The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) strongly condemns on Sunday a missile strike that destroys a girls’ primary school in the southern Iranian city of Minab, calling it a serious violation of international law amid rising regional violence, as stated by reports.

According to the agency, the attack on Saturday kills at least 150 people and wounds nearly 100 others, with many students among the casualties. UNESCO emphasizes that schools are protected spaces under humanitarian law, noting that “attacks against educational institutions endanger students and teachers and undermine the right to education.”

UNESCO joins other UN bodies and senior officials, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in denouncing both ongoing military operations and Iran’s retaliatory strikes across parts of the Middle East.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate and UN Messenger of Peace Malala Yousafzai expresses on X that she is “heartbroken and appalled” by the attack, adding, “the killing of civilians, especially children, is unconscionable, and I condemn it unequivocally.” She calls for an end to the violence, stressing that “all states and parties must uphold their obligations under international law to protect civilians and safeguard schools. Every child deserves to live and learn in peace.”
