Iran Announces Temporary Leadership Council

(MENAFN- Kashmir Observer) Tehran- Iran has appointed senior cleric Alireza Arafi to a temporary leadership body formed to govern the Islamic Republic following the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei.

Arafi will serve alongside President Masoud Pezeshkian and Judiciary Chief Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei as part of a Temporary Leadership Council tasked with ensuring continuity of governance until a new Supreme Leader is selected.

Citing Article 111 of Iran's Constitution, Mohsen Dehnavi, spokesperson for the Expediency Discernment Council, wrote on X:

“According to Article 111 of the Constitution, until a new leader is determined, a temporary leadership council consisting of the president, the head of the judiciary, and one of the jurists of the Guardian Council will be formed.”

Who Is Alireza Arafi?

The 67-year-old Arafi, originally from Maybod, has been a member of Iran's 12-member Guardian Council since 2019. The council, which functions as a constitutional oversight body, reviews legislation passed by Parliament to ensure compliance with the constitution and Islamic law.

Arafi has also headed Iran's seminaries since 2016 and has served as the Friday Prayer Imam of Qom, one of the country's most important religious centres, since 2015.

Middle East analyst Elijah J. Magnier took a swipe at US President Donald Trump over the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, suggesting the move could prove strategically short-sighted if it results in a more hardline successor taking power in Tehran.

Writing on X, Magnier posted:

“Well done @realDonaldTrump and @netanyahu
If Ayatollah Ali Arafi becomes the new leader, may God help the US and (not help Israel). As a Supreme Leader, Washington and Tel Aviv would face a far more ideologically rigid and theologically grounded figure than they have dealt with before. A mujtahid Grand Ayatollah shaped intellectually by Sayyed al-Shahid Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr and raised in a family closely connected to Imam Khomeini's revolutionary circle, Arafi represents a current of clerical authority deeply rooted in doctrinal conviction and institutional continuity. He was in Lebanon, has excellent and very close relationship with Hezbollah, and is fluent in Arabic and English. Compared with such a profile, Ali Khamenei could appear pragmatic. An Arafi leadership would likely signal consolidation of ideological resolve at the apex of the Islamic Republic.”

Magnier's remarks suggest that any transition to Alireza Arafi could harden Tehran's ideological posture rather than moderate it, potentially reshaping the dynamics between Iran, the United States, and Israel and Fallout

Ayatollah Khamenei was assassinated on Saturday when Israeli warplanes dropped 30 bombs on his office in Tehran during a high-level security meeting, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

The strike reportedly killed several senior officials, including:

  • Ali Shamkhani, senior security adviser
  • Mohammad Pakpour, commander of the IRGC
  • Defense Minister Amir Nasirzadeh

The killings have triggered rapid political and military developments across Iran.

The formation of the Temporary Leadership Council signals an effort by Iran's political and religious establishment to project stability and constitutional continuity amid one of the most significant upheavals in the country's modern history.
