Oman, Egypt Urge for Restraint Following US-Israel Airstrikes on Iran
(MENAFN) Oman and Egypt expressed concern on Saturday following US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran, urging restraint and a return to diplomatic avenues.
Oman’s Foreign Ministry stated that it “deeply regrets” the military operations and warned that the conflict could spread across the region. The ministry called on the UN Security Council to meet urgently to advocate for a ceasefire and ensure adherence to international law, emphasizing the importance of resolving disputes peacefully while reaffirming nations’ right to self-defense under international law.
Egypt also voiced its alarm, describing the situation as a dangerous escalation that could broaden the conflict. Cairo warned that continued military action risks plunging the region into greater instability with serious consequences for both regional and international security.
Both countries highlighted that diplomacy and dialogue are the only effective means to prevent further deterioration.
The statements came after the US and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran, claiming it targeted threats posed by the Iranian “regime.” Video statements from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump suggested support for potential changes in Tehran’s government. Iran condemned the strikes as a breach of its sovereignty, pledged retaliation, and launched counterstrikes in response.
