US Defends Strikes on Iran During UN Emergency Session
(MENAFN) During an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council on Saturday, the United States reaffirmed that the protection of its partners remains unwavering as it justified recent military actions targeting Iran.
Addressing the chamber, US envoy Mike Waltz stated that the security of American allies is "not conditional," framing Washington’s operations as a necessary response to escalating threats.
Highlighting Tehran’s military posture, Waltz warned, "Iran's continued pursuit of advanced missile capabilities, coupled with its refusal to abandon nuclear ambitions, despite diplomatic opportunities, presents a grave and mounting danger," underscoring what he described as an expanding security risk.
He reiterated Washington’s longstanding position regarding Iran’s nuclear program, declaring, "The international community has long affirmed a simple and necessary principle: Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon."
Emphasizing that this stance transcends partisan considerations, he added, "That principle is not a matter of politics. It's a matter of global security, and to that end, the United States is taking lawful actions,"
The envoy argued that repeated diplomatic initiatives had been undertaken during the administration of Donald Trump, but maintained that Tehran failed to meet expectations. "American diplomacy was attempted repeatedly and in good faith," he said. "Diplomacy cannot succeed where there is no genuine willingness to cease aggression, where there is no genuine partner for peace."
Waltz further criticized Iranian representation at the Council, asserting that Tehran’s conduct contradicts its claims to legitimacy. "The sad irony is that this same regime will attempt to lecture us today about human rights and the rule of law. Its presence here in this Council makes a mockery of this body."
Pointing to what he described as Iranian attacks on regional states — including Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, and Jordan — Waltz contended that such actions reinforce the rationale behind Washington’s measures.
