UK Minister Josh Simons Quits Over Think Tank Surveillance Scandal

(MENAFN) British Cabinet Office minister Josh Simons resigned Saturday amid mounting controversy surrounding a think tank he previously headed, which reportedly commissioned background research targeting journalists who had written critically about the organization.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer had referred the matter to independent ethics adviser Laurie Magnus, tasking him with determining whether Simons had violated the ministerial code. While Simons maintained he had been cleared of any breach, he nonetheless chose to vacate his post, acknowledging that his continued presence in office had become a "distraction."

At the heart of the scandal is Labour Together, a think tank Simons helmed prior to joining government. Media reports alleged the organization funded investigative background work on journalists behind a story deemed unfavorable to it — a revelation that ignited fierce scrutiny over press freedom and the conduct of public officials.

According to the British government, Simons served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology from January 9 to February 28, and as Parliamentary Secretary in the Cabinet Office from September 7, 2025 to February 28 — a tenure that ended abruptly under the weight of the escalating controversy.

His departure delivers a fresh blow to Starmer's administration, which has faced intensifying pressure to demonstrate its commitment to transparency and ethical governance.
