Moscow Warns US Israeli Attacks on Iran Could Trigger Global Consequences
(MENAFN) The Russian Foreign Ministry has denounced the US and Israeli attacks on Iran as a “premediated and unprovoked act of aggression,” cautioning that the strikes could trigger severe repercussions not only in the Middle East but across the globe.
The operation, carried out on Saturday by Washington and West Jerusalem, was described by US President Donald Trump as an effort to dismantle Iran’s nuclear capabilities and achieve regime change in Tehran. In response, Iran launched retaliatory strikes targeting Israeli sites and American military installations in the region.
Russia is urging the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency to provide an unbiased review of what it calls “reckless actions aimed at disrupting peace, stability and security in the Middle East,” according to the ministry. The statement further warned that these actions could push the region toward “a humanitarian, economic and potentially nuclear catastrophe.”
Moscow characterized the US strikes as an attempt to remove the leadership of a country that has resisted coercion and global domination. The attacks followed inconclusive indirect nuclear discussions between Tehran and Washington in Geneva on Friday, alongside a significant US military buildup in the region.
The Russian Foreign Ministry also highlighted the broader risks, suggesting that the strikes could destabilize the global non-proliferation framework and trigger “uncontrolled escalation” in the Middle East and beyond, with nations worldwide potentially seeking more destructive weapons to safeguard themselves.
On Saturday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke with Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi by phone, pressing for an immediate cessation of the attacks and offering Moscow’s diplomatic support. Araghchi expressed gratitude for Russia’s backing.
Meanwhile, President Vladimir Putin convened a National Security Council session to address the unfolding situation, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told journalists on Saturday.
