Erdogan Expresses Sorrow Over Attacks on Iran

(MENAFN) Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed “deep sorrow” and concern over the recent joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran, saying the attacks "began with provocations by (Israeli Premier) Netanyahu" during remarks on Saturday.

At an event in Istanbul, Erdogan condemned the operations, stating that Türkiye opposes actions “which clearly violate Iran's sovereignty and threaten the peace of the friendly and brotherly Iranian people.”

He also highlighted that “regardless of the reason, we consider Iran's missile and drone attacks on our brotherly countries in the Gulf unacceptable.”

Warning of the broader regional risks, Erdogan cautioned that if diplomacy is not prioritized, “our region faces the risk of being dragged into a ring of fire.” He urged all actors—particularly within the Islamic world—to act swiftly “to prevent further bloodshed and spare our region from greater suffering.”

The president affirmed that Ankara will intensify diplomatic efforts immediately, initially aiming to secure a ceasefire, followed by a return to negotiations at the table.

The strikes occurred early Saturday, with US and Israeli officials citing alleged threats from the "Iranian regime."

They coincided with ongoing US-Iran nuclear talks mediated by Oman, with the latest round concluding in Geneva on Thursday.

These events follow last June’s 12-day Israel-Iran conflict, during which the US joined in striking three Iranian nuclear facilities.
