Netherlands Urges De-escalation as Middle East War Escalates
(MENAFN) The Dutch government Saturday called for calm and de-escalation as joint Israeli-American strikes on Tehran and several other Iranian cities sent shockwaves through the international community, prompting urgent consultations among European allies.
Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten confirmed via social media platform X that the Netherlands was closely tracking developments on the ground. "We are also working closely with our European partners to gather as much information as possible in order to respond appropriately at the right time," Jetten told a local broadcaster on Saturday.
The prime minister made no effort to conceal the gravity of the situation. "It is now evident that we are mainly witnessing a violent escalation, which we hope will not spiral further out of control," he added.
Earlier in the day, Dutch Foreign Affairs Minister Tom Berendsen disclosed that the government had activated direct lines of communication with its embassies across the region to monitor the rapidly shifting situation. Writing on X, Berendsen offered a blunt assessment of what was at stake: "Stability in the region is essential."
The diplomatic reaction came against a backdrop of mounting precaution at home. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced Friday it had elevated its travel advisory to red — its highest warning level — for border zones between Israel and Gaza, Lebanon, and Egypt, citing surging tensions across the Middle East.
The move signals growing unease in The Hague over a conflict that European capitals fear may be rapidly approaching a point of no return.
