Dudley MP Leads Groundbreaking Physiotherapy Training Mission in Ukraine
(MENAFN) Labour MP Sonia Kumar, who represents Dudley and is also a practising NHS physiotherapist, led a pioneering visit to Ukraine to provide physiotherapist training, as stated by reports.
Kumar organised the trip after a visit in September, during which she said she was deeply moved by the courage and resilience of injured Ukrainian soldiers.
According to reports, Ukrainian President Zelensky said last month that 55,000 soldiers have been killed in the conflict, with many more injured, though other sources estimate the total could be as high as 200,000.
Following a long journey on a "rickety train," Kumar delivered training to 25 clinicians to treat injuries sustained on the battlefield. She said she had been assessing conditions such as back injuries, neurological deficits, shoulder injuries, ankle sprains, and other ailments commonly seen in the UK.
However, she noted that the situation for front-line personnel was very different. "If you have an ankle injury and that balloons up, how do you manage that quickly and get someone back to fighting?" she asked.
Kumar also encountered patients with brain injuries or limb amputations, but reflected positively on the experience: "I would do it again."
