Putin Holds Talks on Iran Crisis with Russian Security Council
(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the recent confrontation between the US, Israel, and Iran during a Security Council meeting, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed on Saturday.
Peskov told Russian media that Putin held a videoconference with permanent Security Council members to review the evolving situation around Iran, but provided no additional details, noting that the meeting was conducted behind closed doors.
Earlier on Saturday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke by phone with his Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Araghchi, condemning what he described as an “unprovoked armed attack” on Iran by the US and Israel. Lavrov stated that Russia is prepared to assist in efforts to achieve peaceful solutions grounded in international law, mutual respect, and a balance of interests, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Reports indicate that Israel carried out a so-called “preemptive” strike on Iran under the operation name “Lion’s Roar,” declaring a “special and immediate” state of emergency within the country. US President Donald Trump later announced that American forces had launched “major combat operations” in Iran to “protect the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime.”
The escalation coincides with ongoing US-Iran nuclear talks under Oman’s mediation, with the most recent round in Geneva concluding Thursday. Last June, the US targeted three Iranian nuclear sites during a 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran.
