Turkey Implements Airspace Restrictions After US-Israel Strikes on Iran

(MENAFN) The Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure announced on Sunday that various levels of airspace closures and restrictions have been imposed over Iran, Iraq, Israel, Syria, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar following recent attacks by the US and Israel targeting Iran.

A statement on the ministry’s official social media account highlighted that air traffic services are not being provided over Afghanistan, while airspace regulations are currently in force above the United Arab Emirates (Emirates FIR).

In terms of airport operations, Ben Gurion Airport in Israel is functioning at limited capacity, whereas Haifa, Ramon, Rosh Pina, and Herzliya airports remain closed. In Syria, the status of Damascus and Aleppo international airports may change depending on published notices affecting flight operations.

Concerning the movement of regional air traffic, most flights are now routed through the corridor connecting Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Türkiye, and Southern Cyprus, with some traffic taking paths via northern Azerbaijan toward Türkiye and Europe. This has caused heightened congestion in Turkish airspace; however, authorities stressed that air traffic services are continuing safely and without disruption.

On Saturday, a total of 15 flights were rerouted due to these regional airspace restrictions, with nine diverted to Istanbul Airport. At Tehran Airport, two aircraft operated by Turkish airlines remain grounded.

The ministry added that Turkish carriers are modifying flight paths to comply with current restrictions, while closely monitoring regional developments and coordinating measures to manage potential changes in airspace and airport conditions.
