Severe Flooding in Brazil’s Minas Gerais Leaves Many Dead
(MENAFN) Severe flooding in Minas Gerais, caused by several days of heavy rainfall, has claimed at least 68 lives since Monday, authorities reported, as search teams continue looking for missing residents amid ongoing weather warnings.
The Minas Gerais State Fire Department confirmed that additional bodies were recovered following floods that struck the cities of Juiz de Fora and Uba. Officials said 62 of the fatalities occurred in Juiz de Fora and six in Uba.
Search operations remain underway for five people still reported missing. Landslides triggered by the heavy rains caused multiple homes to collapse.
The National Center for Monitoring and Early Warning of Natural Disasters (Cemaden) warned that intense rainfall is expected to persist, increasing the risk of additional floods and flash floods in the affected regions.
State and federal authorities have mobilized civil defense teams, security personnel, and medical staff to assist communities impacted by the disaster. The administration of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva previously announced new aid packages to help municipalities provide support for residents left homeless by the flooding.
