Omani FM Slams US-Israeli Strikes on Iran, Urges Washington to Step Back
(MENAFN) Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi expressed dismay Saturday over the US-Israeli military strikes on Iran, calling on Washington to pull back and cautioning that the attacks undermined ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Writing on the US-based social media platform X, Albusaidi said, "I am dismayed. Active and serious negotiations have yet again been undermined. Neither the interests of the United States nor the cause of global peace are well served by this."
He added, "I urge the United States not to get sucked in further. This is not your war," and wrote, "I pray for the innocents who will suffer."
The statements carry particular significance given Oman’s key role as mediator in US-Iran nuclear talks. Albusaidi had met with US Vice President JD Vance on Friday, hours before the strikes, expressing optimism: "peace is within our reach."
The strikes occurred while Washington and Tehran were engaged in negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, with the most recent round concluding in Geneva on Thursday.
The joint US-Israeli operation, announced early Saturday, cited alleged "threats" posed by the "Iranian regime." This follows last June’s 12-day Israel-Iran conflict, during which the US targeted three Iranian nuclear facilities.
