Brazil Exports Transformers To Saudi Arabia
According to Hitachi Energy, the transformers are HVDC type and feature technology that allows for more compact and sustainable installations. HVDC stands for high-voltage direct current.
According to Alexandre Malveiro, hub manager for Latin America at Hitachi Energy's Transformer Business Unit, this device is essential for power supply projects over long distances.“It is a key piece of equipment in high-voltage transmission systems, converting and conditioning electricity for long-distance transport. It doesn't convert currents directly but supports the electronic devices that perform the conversion,” Malveiro said in a statement from Hitachi Energy.
Each generator is designed to operate for over 30 years under various climate conditions. They weigh 342 tons during transport and 512 tons once installed. According to the company, the systems will have a total operating capacity of nine gigawatts, equivalent to the consumption of a city roughly the size of Riyadh, with eight million people.
Hitachi says that a Saudi team assessed the Brazilian factory's infrastructure to certify the supply of the transformers, which are exported through the port of Itaguaí in Rio de Janeiro. To reach the terminal, the equipment is loaded onto trailers in transport operations that take several days to complete. Although robust, they are sensitive and must be moved at low speeds. Neom is the city that Saudi Arabia is building in the desert, which will be powered by energy from renewable sources.
