Congressman Gets Removed from House Over Protest at Trump’s Address
(MENAFN) US Representative Al Green was escorted out of the House chamber on Tuesday shortly after President Donald Trump began delivering his State of the Union speech, following a visible act of protest.
As the president entered the chamber, Green, a Democrat from Texas, raised a white placard that read, “Black people aren’t apes." The message referred to a video previously shared on Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social, which reportedly included imagery depicting former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama as apes. According to reports, the video was later taken down by the White House, and Trump stated that a staff member had posted it.
Green was then escorted from the chamber as chants of “USA” echoed through the room.
After leaving the session, he addressed reporters and said Trump noticed the sign and "got the message."
"Tonight, I wanted him to have a person confront him and let him know that Black people aren't apes, (and) that Black people are not going to tolerate this kind of behavior," he said.
Green emphasized the importance of opposing what he described as discriminatory conduct.
"I hope that others will let him have a similar message, so that he would discontinue this behavior," he added.
