Beijing-Washington Diplomatic Channels Active Ahead of Trump Visit

(MENAFN) China confirmed Tuesday that diplomatic channels between Beijing and Washington are active ahead of President Donald Trump's anticipated visit to the East Asian nation, signaling a potential inflection point in strained bilateral relations.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told reporters at a Beijing news conference that Beijing and Washington are "in communication regarding President Trump's visit to China," declining to elaborate on the specifics surrounding the trip.

"Head-of-state diplomacy plays an irreplaceable role in providing strategic guidance for China-US relations," Mao said, underscoring Beijing's view of the summit's strategic weight.

The White House moved first, confirming Friday that Trump will make a three-day trip to China beginning March 31 — a visit expected to wrap up April 2. Washington has yet to release further logistical details.

At the center of the anticipated summit will be trade, with Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping expected to engage in high-stakes negotiations over an economic relationship that has been defined in recent years by tariffs, export restrictions, and deep mutual suspicion.

The confirmation from both capitals marks a notable step in scheduling what could be one of the most consequential diplomatic meetings of Trump's second term.
